Marine Engine Tube Bundle Heat Exchanger — Commercial Vessel
Heavily fouled tube bundle heat exchanger from a marine diesel engine cooling system restored to full thermal capacity in a single recirculation treatment.
Challenge
A commercial vessel operating in tropical waters was experiencing elevated engine coolant temperatures due to severe calcium and mineral scale accumulation in the seawater-side tube bundle of the main engine heat exchanger. The buildup had restricted flow through the tubes and significantly reduced heat transfer, forcing the crew to derate the engine to avoid overheating.
Solution
CFS Descaler was applied in a closed recirculation loop at 4:1 dilution through the seawater side of the tube bundle using a portable circulation pump. The treatment ran for approximately three hours. Visible scale dissolution and discolouration of the return fluid was observed within the first 20 minutes.
Post-treatment inspection confirmed complete removal of scale deposits from the tube surfaces, with clean copper-nickel tubing fully exposed. Engine coolant temperatures returned to normal operating range immediately upon return to service, and the vessel resumed full-rated power without restriction.
Commercial Vessel Box Cooler Maintenance
Fleet operator adopts CFS Descaler as standard box cooler maintenance protocol, replacing previous acid product at lower cost and without DG freight complications.
Challenge
A commercial vessel operator with a mixed-age fleet was managing scale buildup in box cooler arrays using a competitor product shipped as dangerous goods. Freight premiums, handling requirements and limited pack sizes were increasing maintenance costs.
Solution
CFS Descaler was trialled as a non-DG alternative on two vessels. The 4:1 concentrate ratio significantly reduced freight volume. Standard circulation protocol was adapted from existing procedures with minimal modification.
Fleet adoption followed the trial. The operator reported reduced total cost including freight, and no performance compromise. CFS Descaler is now specified in the company maintenance manual.
Structural Steel Rust Passivation — Marina Infrastructure
In-situ treatment of heavily rusted marina berthing structure steel without disassembly or sandblasting. Gel format enabled full treatment of vertical and overhead surfaces.
Challenge
A marina operator needed to address heavy rust on steel berthing structures before recoating. Access constraints made sandblasting impractical. A chemical treatment that could be applied by brush and left to work on vertical surfaces was required.
Solution
CFS RustOff Gel was applied by brush to all affected surfaces in multiple coats. The thixotropic formulation held on vertical members without running. Dwell time was 45 minutes for the most heavily affected areas.
Full conversion of surface rust to iron phosphate on all treated areas. Primer coat was applied within 48 hours of treatment. No mechanical preparation was required beyond initial loose scale removal.
What Our Customers Say
"We've tried multiple descaling products over the years. CFS Descaler is the first one we've adopted fleet-wide. The non-DG classification is a genuine operational advantage."Fleet Engineer — Commercial Vessel Operator, Australia
"The gel didn't run. That sounds simple but it made the entire difference on vertical structure. We could apply and walk away — come back an hour later to a converted surface."Maintenance Supervisor — Marine Infrastructure, QLD
"Performance matched the TDS exactly. The 4:1 concentrate means I'm ordering four times less volume for the same treatment capacity. Significant cost reduction."Chief Engineer — Superyacht, Mediterranean
